Birthing Center

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing our Birthing Center. We truly feel that it is an honor and privilege to share in the joy of the birth of your newborn.

The Birthing Center is located on the first floor of Mahaska Hospital at 1229 C

The Birthing Center offers newly remodeled, private birthing rooms as well as seven family practice physicians who are on staff in the Birthing Center, providing pre and postnatal care along with care of the newborn. Two surgeons, along with CRNAs, provide surgical services.

When Peter and Kelly moved to Tracy they were referred to Dr. Richmond of Family Medical Center for the birth of their second child, Raegan. Their experience and the amount of care they received was so great they decided to return for the birth of their third daughter, Sarah. "Our first daugther, Taylor was born at a big hosptial in Arizona. Not that our experience was bad but there were not a lot of personal touches, we just felt like another number. The little touches at MHP like the fridge with pop and treats and being allowed to bring our other kids in were really nice. The nurses really care and took the time to get to know us; people remembering us was a great feeling," Peter and Kelly said of the time they spent at the MHP Birthing Center.

What You Should Bring To The Hospital:

Vicki VanDerPol, Birthing Center Nurse

We supply the following:

  • Gown
  • Robe
  • Shampoo
  • Underwear
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Comb
  • Sanitary napkins

Please feel free to bring any of your own for your comfort and personal needs.

Items you may want to bring:

  • Clothes for mom and baby to go home in. Don't forget a blanket for baby and loose-fitting or maternity clothing for mom.
  • Socks, slippers and a bathrobe
  • Toiletries
  • Reading material
  • Nursing bra, if you are planning to breastfeed
  • Contact information for friends and family
  • Car seat

What to do if you think you are in labor:

If you can, please call the Birthing Center at 641-672-3170.  If you do not receive an answer, wait for the operator to pick up or dial 641-672-3100.

When you arrive at the hospital:

Enter through the main entrance under the canopy, and check in at the admitting desk.

      

If it is between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., a weekend or a holiday:        

     Enter through the Emergency Room door on the East side of the hospital and check in at the ER admitting desk.

Pictures of the Birthing Center:

     

A celebration dinner is prepared for new moms and dads before they leave the hospital.  The menu, with choices of chicken, steak and many other options, is provided in advance and the dinner is served in your room.

    

All of the rooms in the Birthing Center are private birthing suites where mom can stay from labor through delivery and until she goes home.

What Birthing Center Visitors Need to Know:

  • We have an open visitation policy with respect to the mother's, and the baby's, sleep needs
  • Please do not visit if you are ill, or have a cold
  • Children may visit as long as they are not ill
