New Directions: Depression

The following questions are some of the most commonly asked when a mental health professional is assessing whether or not an individual suffer from depression.

  1. Do you feel depressed on most days for the majority of the day?
  2. Have you noticed having less interest or pleasure in usual activities?
  3. Have you experience significant increase or decreases in appetite, weight, or both?
  4. Are you experiencing sleep difficulties, either insomnia or excessive sleepiness nearly every day?
  5. Are you experiencing a loss of energy and a daily sense of tiredness?
  6. Do you have a sense of guilt and worthlessness nearly all of the time?
  7. Are you experiencing the inability to concentrate nearly every day
  8. Do you have recurrent thoughts of death or suicide?
  9. Do you withdraw from, or avoid people?
  10. Do you see the future as hopeless?

A mental health specialists, such as a psychiatrist, social worker, or psychologist is the best source for a diagnosis of depression.
