New Directions: Psychiatrists
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have graduated from a four-year medical school, and have completed both an internship and a residency in psychiatry. The residency usually lasts from four to five years. Psychiatrists are the only mental health professionals who can prescribe medication for mental health issues. Some psychiatrists offer psychotherapy services ("talk therapy") in addition to medication management, while others focus specifically on medication management and work in conjunction with other mental health professionals who provide psychotherapy.
